Approximately 50 automobiles have been marked with what appears to be blood from a person in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Cars, building surfaces and postboxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were contacted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a individual noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a swastika, they added.
Officers then found many other marked cars and building exteriors in the surrounding area.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under legislation outlawing the public display of Nazi symbols.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the substance was most likely blood from a person.
"There is still no clue as to where it came from; authorities are not yet aware of any injuries in relation with the incident," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have asked to the residents for details.
A senior official said the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed quickly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and revives the trauma of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the murder of nine individuals by a gunman aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in five years prior.
